STEMMED CARTRIDGES

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Nxco stemmed cartridges are marketed under two brands – Nonex and Nxburst which are identical in appearance, performance and composition.

The technology is based on a non-detonating chemical compound enclosed in a cartridge, which reacts quickly when ignited to produce high volumes of gas, mainly consisting of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and steam.

When the cartridge is sealed in a drill hole, the gas generated by the ignition of the propellant enters into the micro-fractures created by the percussive drilling process and into the natural fractures and planes of weaknesses of the rock to produce a shearing of the rock or concrete often called splitting.

A deflagrating propellant based composition is contained within a tube.
Initiation is done by means of either an electrical igniter or a shock tube initiator which is contained within the cartridge. On the universal cartridge options, the igniter forms part of the sequential timing system which is screwed into the cartridge on site.

NONEX/NXBURST RANGE

These cartridges are available with a choice of initiators.

  1. Electric initiation is available on all.
  2. Non-electric initiation is offered for sizes larger than 34mm.
  3. A timing system for sequential firing is available for use on the 34mm, 60mm and 90mm cartridge ranges.
  4. All cartridges are water-resistant and can be waterproofed on request.

13mm cartridge range

Rock Poppers are used for breaking small boulders up to 2 cubic meters in size. Applications include crusher blockages, oversize boulders, scale removal in tanks and small demolition jobs.

Available charge weights
5g  & 10g

28mm cartridge range

28mm cartridges are used for boulder breaking, armored stone splitting, medium size concrete demolition, dimension stone quarrying, swimming pool excavations and other in situ rock-breaking applications.

28mm cartridges requires a 32-34mm diameter drill hole which can be drilled with a handheld pneumatic drill using a 160 cubic feet per minute (cfm) compressor.

Available charge weights
20g, 40g, 60g, 80g, 100g, 120g, 140g & 160g

34mm cartridge range

34mm cartridges are used for deep level underground mining operations, concrete demolition, tunnel and shaft enlargement, trenching and other in situ rock excavations.

34mm cartridges requires a 38-42mm diameter drill hole which can be drilled with a handheld pneumatic drill using a 160-400 cfm compressor (depending on the number of rock drills to be used simultaneously) or by a small hydraulic rig.

Available charge weights
20g, 40g, 60g, 80g, 100g, 120g, 140g, 160g, 180g & 250g

42mm cartridge range

Used for concrete demolition, tunnel and shaft enlargement, trenching and other large in situ rock excavations.

42mm cartridges requires a 45-51mm diameter drill hole which can be drilled with a handheld pneumatic drill using a 160-400 cfm compressor (depending on the number of rock drills to be used simultaneously) or by a small hydraulic rig.

Available charge weights are
60g, 80g, 120g, 180g & 240g

60mm cartridge range

60mm cartridges can be used for trenching, harbour deepening, tunnel and shaft enlargement and other large scale sensitive rock and concrete breaking applications.

60mm cartridges requires a 66-76mm diameter drill hole which can be drilled with a small hydraulic or pneumatic drilling rig.

Available charge weights are
200g, 300g, 400g & 500g

90mm cartridge range

90mm cartridges can be used for open cast mining, large rock excavation, selective mining of high grade ore, reduction of ultrafines in coal mining operations and other sensitive large excavations such as lava removal.

90mm cartridges requires a 115-127mm diameter drill hole which can be drilled with a small drilling rig.

Available charge weights are
2000g, 3000g & 4000g
